Summary

Dmitriy Fokin from the Light Materials and Technologies Institute UC of the Russian aluminum manufacturer Rusal reported on new aluminum alloys for die casting applications in his presentation “Heat Treatment free HPDC AL Alloy”. RUSAL has developed a family of heat treatment free aluminum alloys based on the Al-Ca eutectic. The presentation demonstrated that Al-Ca alloys can be considered as an alternative to conventional cast aluminum alloys, including traditional Al-Si alloys. A series of HPDC tests performed with the new Ca-based alloys confirmed their good casting properties as well as excellent corrosion resistance and good as-cast mechanical properties. The next step will be to test the new Al-Ca alloys in the production of real car parts.
