3.1 - Gas-based Hot Sheet Metal Forming of High-strength Aluminium

Dr.-Ing. Emad Scharifi | IBF (Institute of Metal Forming)

Summary

Emad Scharifi (IBF at RWTH Aachen University) presented the development process for complex components using high-speed blow forming (HSBF). This method combines mechanical and gas-based forming techniques to optimize the strength and formability of aluminum, which is particularly important for lightweight construction in the e-automotive sector. The challenge for the application of the process lies in the complexity of transferring it to new components. To this end, the problem is simplified in the first step by using a simpler, rotationally symmetrical geometry and investigated using similar test methods to HSBF such as the hot gas bulge test. This is followed by a transfer to more complex geometries (3D forming) and further tests to create a forming limit diagram and determine the forming parameters. Finally, the robustness of the model is proven on realistic geometries.
