3.3 - Use of Additively Manufactured Insert Structures for AluminiumDie Casting
Lukas Bruckmeier | GI (Foundry institute)
Summary
Lukas Bruckmeier (GI of RWTH Aachen University) explained the advantages of additive manufacturing of insert structures in aluminum high-pressure die casting. This technology enables the production of locally reinforced components with great design freedom, which would not be possible using conventional methods. The additively manufactured structures become an integral part of the casting, which avoids joining processes and results in smaller components. The results show that low-defect components can already be cast, depending on the shape of the 3D-printed inserts. For industrial application, however, the relationships between the casting parameters, the properties of the inserts and the mechanical properties still need to be analyzed. Furthermore, the filling mechanisms must be investigated for transfer to other geometries for inserts and the main cast part.
